The 2014 Peppermint Oil Study

A 2014 study in Toxicological Research compared topical peppermint oil against saline, jojoba, and 3% Minoxidil groups. The peppermint group showed the highest measurements in follicle depth, dermal papilla size, and proliferation markers (Ki67). Higher than the Minoxidil group in this study.

Two Mechanisms

Vasodilation via menthol — local increased blood flow to follicle area. IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1) upregulation — a key molecule promoting the anagen (growth) phase, found elevated in follicle tissue after peppermint application.

Why Extra Pure Grade Matters

Menthol content determines the strength of vasodilation and IGF-1 effect. Extra Pure grade preserves more menthol than standard steam-distilled peppermint oil. Vihira 360° Hair Recovery Oil uses Mentha Piperita Leaf Oil Extra Pure — maximum menthol concentration, formulated safely in fractionated coconut at appropriate concentration.

Does peppermint oil really grow hair?

Peppermint oil has interesting preclinical research, including a 2014 mouse study, but human evidence for hair growth remains limited. It should not be presented as a proven treatment for hair loss.

No. Peppermint essential oil is highly concentrated and can irritate the scalp when used undiluted. Use an appropriately formulated product and stop if burning, redness or persistent irritation occurs.
